My Blue Experience
Reza (No Surname)
HI, my name is Reza and I’ll be sharing with you my experience on the internship I obtained with SOCOMEP (Societé de Controle d’Expertise Maritime de Pêches). SOCOMEP is a fisheries quality and quantity control company which deal with large tuna fishing vessels. They are also a global exporter of tuna and tuna-like species.
My first day started with me seeking out the main office which was found at the fishing port. Entering the office, there was a short wait in which I got some new and shiny gear including a florescent jacket, a hard hat and safety boots. This new attire immediately made me feel like part of the respectable work force. Thereafter, a gentleman guided me to their conference room and briefed me about what the company was about, which was further enriched by a lovely lady by the name of Emily, the human resource manager (HR). She continued by showing me around the premises and introducing me to some of the friendly staff.
Leaving me in the capable hands of Miss Julie and Miss Jill, lab work followed soon after. I was simply an observer however I still learnt how to carry out the three main tests done on fish at SOCOMEP which include salt testing, histamine testing and the organoleptic test and the chronological procedure these tests must be carried out in. Proper documentation of results was stressed on by Miss Julie and I could only imagine how strenuous the cross checks must be. The decently equipped lab also deals with packaging and labelling of fish to be sent either to SBS (Seychelles Bureau of Standard) or abroad for further and more complex tests, including heavy metal tests.
After a brief lunch at the nearby takeaway, worked resumed in the lab where new tests of the same type where performed now on new fish from new "wells". These tests filled in the rest of my day and time moved along quickly especially in the friendly atmosphere which was created by the lab staff. Eventually the time had come for me to leave. On my way home, I thought of the challenges await me tomorrow and a sense of excitement ran through me.
